DIY: Air Conditioner

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Here is a cool tip for a hot summer. You can make your own air conditioning system! It will cost you virtually nothing, because you probably have all things needed to make it in your house.

You need:
- simple fan
- 2 empty PET bottles
- freezer

Step 1.
Fill empty PET bottles with water from tap.

Step 2.
Put the bottles in freezer.

Step 3.
When water freezes and turns into ice, put the bottles in front of fan, and turn the fan on.

Now you can enjoy hours of fresh, cold air circulating in your room. Ideally, you can put another two bottles of water in freezer, for instant swap and continous air conditioning during all day.

Changing sshd port

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

If you have your own or dedicated server it’s always good idea to change some ports of its default values. The most often moving service port of standard value you’ll escape hordes of script kiddies who try to hack your server using brute force cracking scripts. So one of these is sshd for sure. You can do this in a minute or two. Just open sshd configuration file, sshd_config which is usually positioned in /etc/ssh directory, uncomment “Port” parameter and change value to, for example, 2233. Save the change and restart sshd service issuing following command:

service sshd restart

That’s it. Also it’s worth mentioning that you should not change ports for each service, like smtpd or named. You should do that only with services which are used by controlled number of people to whom you can easily tell new port number. If your local service is used by other services on the internet it could be bad idea.

Deadliest job

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Per some statistical research deadliest job in USA is working on cell phone towers, 183.6 deaths per 100,000 workers.

However underground reports display interesting data. Actually truck drivers are pretty jeopardized. They drive many hours without stops and they usually fall asleep and die in accidents. Not to mention military soldiers, underground street fighters and stunt performers.
