Google’s greed culminates to extremes

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Recently I noticed a strafe Scientology campaign running on a few popular sites I visit quite often. The ads are not offensive that much, but I noticed they don’t have any ‘Google Ads’ tags around. At first I thought they belong to other advertising agency, but when I clicked on the flash ad I saw the googlesydnication URL which confirmed my assumption. Obviously the scientologists brand their religion online, so the Christians and Islamists could/should do the same, just to stay in touch with modern religion branding methods.

Therefore we could expect the upcoming rampage of religion online advertisements. Obviously, advertising a religion doesn’t breach Google’s Polices, OR the scientologists pay them so good so it’s worth to change or breach own rules? Personally, I don’t have anything against religion of any kind, even Scientology. Basically, this story is Google related, and has nothing to do with any religion.

Now, I see ‘smiley-download’ and adult dating sites advertise on AdWords as well, which means Google shareholders want MORE, and they can get more only through AdWords and AdSense, since 50% of other Google projects are still non-profitable ‘betas’. The plausible solution to get more is to allow rough websites to advertise their malicious apps on Google Adsense.

Unfortunately, Google AdSense Publishers have much stricter rules then AdWords advertisers. For example if you own a website with content related to penis enlargement, you won’t be able to place AdSense on your website. However, some publishers report that Google contacted them in order to run advertising campaigns for prescription erectile dysfunction drugs on their sites. Such brands as Cialis®, Levitra®, Viagra® and other similar drugs you can see frequently in your inbox or mostly in your SPAMBOX, so from now on they will flood the entire web as well. Isn’t it a paradox to allow advertiser to promote their adult services and forbid publishers to generate relevant content?

What should be their next step? Maybe, allowing advertising of armory and selling weapons through AdWords? I don’t think so, because Google doesn’t do EVIL. Maybe, gambling ads? Who cares, the most important is to skyrocket the Google shares which are apparently going down from day to day. Hopefully the G1 with Android OS will exceed their expectation and satisfy the most of Google shareholders.

The Digg Files: I Want To Believe

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

- Time is our enemy!
- What’s this supposed to mean?
- Something that I’ve been afraid of and haven’t had to face until now.
- What? What!?! Just say it.
- It is not that simple .. I have 6 arms! But who believes that crap anymore?

mbm digging with six arms
- Well, they do at the Digg community, apparently… I had a visitor today… The Digg wants your help finding a missing story.
- Well, I hope you told them to go screw themselves?
- They say ‘all is forgiven. That they’ll drop all charges against you if you come in and help them solve this case.
- The Digg community will forgive me? They put me on trial on bogus charges and tried to discredit a decade of my work. They should be asking me for my forgiveness.
- I think they are. Desperately.

How to download a SWF file

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Its sometimes handy to get that flash animation, or online game downloaded to your local hard disc, so you can easily run it again later. There are many ways to download SWF file, and many web pages sells software to do that job, but you can do it also for free, it’s quick and simple. You’ll need Firefox browser.

Step 1.
Open web page which contains your wanted SWF file with Firefox.

Step 2.
Click anywhere on page’s empty space with right mouse button, and select “View page info”.

Step 3.
Under “media” tab find your desired SWF file, and click “save as”.

That’s it, now you have saved SWF file to a local hard disc. Locally saved SWF files you can open with any web browser, or standalone flash player.

Can’t Digg but the account still alive

Friday, September 19th, 2008
Today I felt like digging and I did. I dugged all my friends submissions and many other stuff. And then the cowboy window popped out, asking me to slow down. I continued to digg stories and after a while again … easy cowboy window.
And now… hmmm… I can’t digg. Account is still alive (and I hope it will stay that way) but I can’t digg stories. I sumbitmed two new stories and they both got 0 diggs, which only means one thing - Digg blocked me digging. … For how long? :(

Is anyone else here with similar experience?

I did digg more than I do usually, but wasn’t using any scripts or whatsoever… Never, OK??? So, this time Digg really has no basics to ban me. Once more, I wasn’t using any scripts, so Digg, do not ban me, all right?

How to find video files (movies) on the web?

Friday, September 19th, 2008
Some time ago I used to use Pear-to-Pear networks to find video files or public domain movies. Torrents, E-mule, E-donkey, Kazaa, Morpheus, LimeWire are cool applications which operates P2P. These are quite handy because I was able to find virtually any video or audio material in two easy steps: search & download.

However downloading was problematic, whole process took quite some time, sometimes even 3-7 days, and if there was small number of peer computers with requested title downloading time has been extend ed to a month or more.

The WEB
Few years ago copyrighted material which appeared on the web has been quickly removed by shutting down incriminated web pages, whole web sites, even servers, since copyright owners started legal battle on many fronts.
But they forgot about the “law of large numbers” (LLN): since then number of web sites had tripled, but their legal resources haven’t.

With this idea on mind I decided to check the good old web. Emerging of powerful file hosting web sites such as Rapidshare and Megaupload added sense to this idea; increased Internet throughput added even more.

After first search I was amazed. I didn’t need to digg deep. I found bunch of results pointing to various web sites for each search query. Mostly with links pointing to Rapidshare, Megaupload or few other file storing web sites. A search for copyrighted material revealed even more results.

Putting these simple queries in Google seach will give you an idea:
dark water 2005 rapidshare
or
mammoth 2006 megaupload

Obviously MPAA and RIAA will have to return their focus on world wide web if they want to patch this new /old hole in their profit wagons. Until then, the hole is getting bigger every day.
