Heads are rolling on Digg.com ..

.. or it’s just site database issue.

Somewhere between 16:00h and 20:00h (PMT) more than 50 power users were removed from Digg.com. Trying to access their Digg personal profiles leads to server error page. This could mean only two things. Either users have been banned or some kind of technical error occurred.

Quick inspecting on their 48 hours activity shows that they had high level of activity, more than 300 diggs, some of them even 1000+. It’s not clear if users are banned because of their scripts usage or for some other reasons. Maybe some of them will speak out about this massive Digg ban.

It seems that Digg.com continues to upgrade its anti-cheat policies and that cheats tracking system became more sophisticated.

At the moment most diggers with the activity below 10-12 hours are still “alive” but it the following period we’ll see, if the Digg tsunami will continue.

RIP kickoff22, diggboss, MasterOfHyrule and all many other digg friends now gone!

  2. Cristian Says:

Why didn’t they ban mrmanbaby? >:(

  3. kristen Says:

I have been banned. I am very upset about it because a fellow digger that I trust told me to use greasemonkey for faster digging. I had no idea that Digg made this a no no in their tos or I would have stopped using it. I was KristenMunson on Digg.

  4. Benny Greenberg Says:

I guess this will kill my run for the White House

  5. InRussetShadows Says:

Digg is trash unless they get rid of admitted cheaters like MrBabyMan.

  6. Macros, Bots and Scripts…Oh My! — Social Media Mom Says:

[...] Wow! That’s harsh. My question is, why no warning, like if you are spamming? Why no e-mail letting us know of the changes to the terms of service so that we might have the opportunity to adjust to their rules? This type of behavior is just going to frustrate Diggers even more, because not only are accounts now banned but many have lost a lot of their friends. [...]

  7. nathrat Says:

AwesomeinTheory and TaliaRose seem to be gone as well.

  8. Jim Dorey Says:

They are a bunch of ignorant asses over there @ Digg. No clue. A good story is a good story and I don’t care WHERE IT COMES FROM. Man they have to get it together. Mixx and Stumbleupon are far better places if you ask me.

  9. explicitmemory Says:

I was one of the people that was also banned yesterday and the whole experience has frustrated me like you wouldn’t believe. I was violating the Digg TOS by using the script created by Darth Vader, but have heard of others who were banned. I have also heard of others who were given a second chance on the site after being banned more than once.

I on the other hand have never been banned before ever - this is the first time. When I shot an email to Digg and explained this to them, they didn’t want to hear it. Yes I was using the script, but all I want is a second chance to redeem myself. This whole ban my account without any warning is bullshit!

What do you all think about this? I know I was wrong, I admit to that. But do you think it’s right for Digg to just shut me down without any warning and ban the account for life? Or do you believe I should get one more shot and prove to them that I can play by their rules? I don’t know, maybe this is a waste of time, but what can I cay I need my Digg….

  10. Orlando69 Says:

I was banned as well. Total BS but you know what, I am using some of the other sites now and I get better content from my stumbleupon friends and have to spend much less time on the social media sites. It seems like a win win for me. Digg will eventually pay the price as well cause they have been trying to sell the site for a while and are no longer getting the value they thought they would get because other companies are on to the scams that they use. Their traffic is not real but computer driven. Kind of ironic being they ban bots from them but they use bots to their advantage. Anyone looking to hook up on Stumble just look for me as orlando37 over there.

  11. Richard Says:

    No warning??
There’s been lots of talk/stories about it on digg over the last few days/weeks, it’s even on the digg blog.
    http://blog.digg.com/?p=162
Quote from digg blog: “Scripts/bots place additional load on Digg servers (slowing things down for everyone), so using them is a Terms of Use violation that will result in losing access to your Digg account.”

  12. Jordan Says:

You broke the TOS, they have the right to do whatever the hell they like.

  13. netneutrality Says:

OliverTaco + “mrbabymin” are missing too.

  14. jojo Says:

explicitmemory: one more shot? get a new email address and start over. stop whining

  15. digguser Says:

    no mrbabyman, lol?

  16. B1663r Says:

I was banned as well. Lol, I thought It was because I posted Sarah Palins e-mail.

  17. Please Says:

Please, all of you, leave and stay gone. Please continue to auto-ban these people, you are doing the right thing. Everyone on here crying just take a second to read your own post, hopefully you will understand how ridiculous you are.

  18. JMC Says:

You can still browse Digg if you were banned, and hopefully its free of your bullshit FP stories that would never get there without your scripts. Good riddance.

  19. Syn Says:

    @ explicitmemory

Yes. Yes you should. You broke the rules. Second chances shouldn’t be expected, that’s setting HORRIBLE precedence. Not everyone gets a ‘get out of jail free’ card.

People who ‘play’ Digg annoy me to start with. Scripts to digg faster? Just use the site like it’s meant to be used.

  20. marke Says:

you have the be the biggest friggin loser in the world to try to “cheat” digg, whatever the hell that means.

  21. Shaun Says:

What happened to the old-skool method of digging manually?

  22. john Says:

I think anyone who was banned was probably done so for script usage, and if they spelled it out in their ToS, sorry, see ya.

  23. donoram Says:

You cheat, you’re out. Done. Stop whining.

    And also, ha ha.

  24. chris Says:

Serves those cheaters right. No, nobody deserves a second chance. Create a new digg account, that is your second chance.

  25. Sour Grapes Says:

    @explicitmemory

Why give you a second chance?

So you can find some other scripts that they have no way of detecting yet? The tos states that no scripts are allowed and there have been many stories about bans due to running scripts.

I can see users getting a second chance in the past if they truly didn’t realize scripting was a violation but with all the recent stories and talk about this subject, there is no more accepting the “i didn’t know it was wrong” excuses. If Digg meant so much to you then you should have played by the rules. People like you will destroy what Digg truly stands for. Good riddance to cheap trash.

  26. Bob Says:

If you violate the TOS, you get what you deserve. If you drink and drive and kill a man, you think the judge will let you off the hook because it’s your first person you’ve killed? Get over it.

Digg is an awesome site, and for those of us that get bored with the internet at times this gives us a chance to find something new. Use the tool for what it was made for.

  27. Kinglink Says:

A good story would be a good story, but the way digg works a good story doesn’t get highly rated or the front page, a story everyone diggs gets on the front page, that’s why we get tons of huffington post, dailykos, and raw story (which has dropped thankfully) spam, but little to no real (semi unbiased) news stories. Not to mention the multitude of inaccurate stories. Then of course the reasoning or a comment clearly refuting the story gets buried down because its the “will of the people”.

Personally I think digg has lost it’s luster. It’s a good idea but sadly it’s horrible in use because special interests (mostly Ron Paul and Obama supporters, but huffington post in general, as well as others) have shown how easy it is to hijack the system by either sensationalism, or just getting a larger voting block.

  28. B1663r Says:

LOL, looking at that list, it reads like a who’s who of the people that made digg interesting to read. If you guys don’t want the people who post thoughtful links and have interesting conversations on digg, thats fine with me. The Internet will simply route around the censorship, and digg will become the yahoo of news aggregators.

Good enough for me, I wasn’t complaining, I was laughing at you.

  29. ERTY Says:

ok, someone spell out exactly what these scripts did. there are legitimate uses of scripting and illegitmate uses, but you cant just say scripts are evil without any context.

  30. boo! Says:

They say in the TOS that people who use scripts get banned, without any warning. You used a script, I assume you knew the TOS because you have to agree to it when signing up so it’s your fault.

Your banned from digg, kindly fuck off. You messed up, deal with it =)

  31. Sour Grapes Says:

    @ERTY

I can’t believe you haven’t read all the stories about what these scripts do.

Basically they allow users to digg a bunch of stories from “friends” very quickly without reading the stories. No manual digging, basically just blind digging.

If you want to know more then look the stories up.

  32. Brian Cuban Says:

I was wondering why I started getting hate email claiming my article started all this. You would think Digg had never heard of scripts before I wrote my article. This was all on their radar long before I wrote anything.

    Brian Cuban

    Confessions Of A Banned Digger</a

  33. Blake Says:

Why would you use scripts to post a huge count anyway? does that really make you cool? I just don’t see the point or what all of you were trying to prove. Does the size of your internet penis matter that much?

  34. SamnStr8 Says:

B1663r: You seem to assume that those users are the only ones (out of many thousands) who browse Digg daily that submitted high quality stories, or had thoughtful opinions to post. The other side of the argument is that, since these users posted stories so quickly to Digg they had no time to read through the stories and determine their quality, as legitimate users do. This leads to lower quality stories overall since these users have inordinate influence over what is front-paged.

ERTY: It doesn’t matter what the scripts did, since any script is explicitly forbidden in Digg’s TOS. If you’re arguing for Digg to change its TOS that’s fine, but atm the relative “evilness” of the scripts has no bearing on their being forbidden.

  35. hi Says:

digg is filled with a bunch of children who don’t contribute shit to a discussion. The whole “report this post” options is another crock of shit because the internet is about free speech, whether it be racist, hate speech, or any other offensive speech a person should retain the right to post what they feel. This is why slashdot is such a nice place, no one has EVER had their account disabled for spouting off flamebait or being a troll. Fuck digg and their dictactorship ways.

  36. ERTY Says:

ah ok, yeah thats just going to undermine the system.

  37. Angela Quattrano Says:

Anybody who is a regular user on the site and didn’t know that scripts are banned hasn’t been reading stories. I guess they were too busy digging with their scripts and didn’t have time to read any of the stories.

  38. Sour Grapes Says:

    @Angela Quattrano

    I dugg you up.

    Oh wait…..

  39. MasterOfHyrule Says:

I was banned myself as listed… I only dugg my friends submissions mostly.

I wish digg would of had warnings like first offense then ban.’

Lets all move to reddit or mixx.

  40. haha Says:

ha! all the whiny mewling made my day! (esp you angela!)

    Ban em all. Fucking cheaters.

  41. K A Says:

    Who cares, Reddit is better.

  42. Bizz Says:

No second chances. Grow up. People who think life gives second chances are what I refer to as kids. Blind scripting is ignorant. I have actually not been coming to Digg as often because of all of the Uber Liberal BS, but I think most people will be somewhere in the middle. Most of the liberal articles that have been on Digg in the last few weeks, are as effective as Rush Limbaugh, in that it only appeals to a limited audience. A good story is like a good movie, and that it will rise to the top if it is good. Digg should be something a writer strives to achieve. By having some kids CHEAT the system, then bad writers get the credit, while actually good stories get overlooked. You cheat everyone out of a good story, education, information, knowledge, and entertainment if you use a script. What gives you the right to take away other peoples rights?

  43. ArnoldPettibone Says:

Farewell beloved network. It’s true - I was a script user. But for me, Digg and my account was like a garden that I enjoyed watching it as it grew. I never dugg for money. I did it b/c I’m a little bit of a compulsive weirdo (say you aren’t), and I liked watching my digg stats go up and I liked trying to build an awesome network. It was just some recreation I did to kill time when I wasn’t working. The script helped me build a better network, but ultimately it was my undoing. No tears though. I say Eff the entire digg team. It’s obvious they’re a bunch of hipster fascists and if I can’t use scripts, the I don’t want anything to do with their site anyway.

  44. B1663r Says:

    SamnStr8,

Well once again, I wasn’t using any script. The people applauding this action by digg seem to be under the delusion that it would somehow change the contents of the front page, which by the looks of it, it hasn’t. I didn’t start digging lots of stories until Digg insisted I did by their suggestion list. In fact, right up until I was banned, I was getting a message telling me to keep digging to get more suggestions.

But whatever… I know from my many posts with 100+ diggs, it is diggs loss, and not mine. I know from the 10+ fans I was getting each and every day, digg will suffer from my absence. Where ever I wind up, will probably wind up probably be the news aggregator that replaces digg over the next year, now that Digg is actively censoring popular and prolific users.

  45. iseondhaha Says:

go home and whine your cheating asses to your momma… cheaters never prosper.. go and script your heart out to reddit.. big HAHAs to all of you first graders.. ouch!

The best post in the lot. I so fucking totally agree. Freedom of Speech should always be upheld. Doesn’t matter if its trolling, crude, nasty or an opposite opinon or view. You don’t like it, then ignore it or digg it down. What’s with the reporting shit? Only pussies wearing chinese made scottish kilts do that.

  47. B1663r Says:

    iseondhaha,

Yeah, just a guess, because all the complainers of recent were complaining of Obamas dominance of the front page. Looking at the front page right now. Half of the top diggs are anti-McCain articles. It remains that way even though the scripters are now gone. I havent been following it, but has even a single one of those wnd pages managed to front page since the ban? Nope.

So even though I created the social network that is now totally pwning neo-con fuckwits on dig, my legacy remains total pwnage of people like you.

I guess that means I win.

  48. sickofdigg Says:

Digg is fake. If I have an interest now in any topic, I visit a site dedicated to that topic and then give them my two cents. The fact that people like mrbabyman can stay around and game the system is just more proof how pathetic digg has become.

  49. Boomer Says:

    @ explicitmemory

Seriously? You think because you didn’t think they would ‘really’ ban you that you should get a second chance? You knowingly and intentionally and blatantly broke the rules, and now that you’re certain that you really can be punished, you think it’s BS that you’re not getting a second chance?

This same attitude is the source of so many problems on so many different levels in this world. I’m sure you’re a swell person and all, but really, you actually think this way? I’m surprised you even left that comment for others to see.

    wow.

  50. Sammy Says:

I got banned just for my opinion and they weren’t violating any TOS rules. 1780 friends, 12,065 profile views. I wonder if there’s a script that helps ban people. Digg has gotten to the point where it’s just another old Yahoo type news message board.

  51. Satan Says:

Hahahahah. If this was my world, you would have been hung, drawn and quartered. Second chance my *ss.

Now I hope you all go away and stay away from Digg. You ruined it and we’re trying to repair it.

  52. Anonymous (no not that one!) Says:

Diggboss contributed a great script to Digg that actually reduced shout spam, made it easier to delete old shouts, and allowed you to easily see who your real friends were on the site.

In no way did it allow a user to digg shouts any faster other than to conveniently open up all your shouts at once in your FF tabs. It was not an automatic digging system like the kind Brian Cuban admitted using.

Imho, Digg would do well to incorporate the enhancements that Diggboss created for all users rather than to ban many members who cared enough about Digg to devote much of their spare time to the site.

  53. notbanned Says:

I haven’t been banned, but I’d less interested in spending time on digg contributing now. A lot of my digg friends moved to able2know and reddit because of their friends being banned and when my friends leave the site it doesn’t matter why it happened or if it was fair or not it makes the site less interesting to me.

  54. huntedbydigg Says:

Even I was banned 2 weeks back,I was using that account since 2005 with 2500 diggs,3200 comments and over 10,000 page views,I wasn’t a regular user at all,I don’t know why digg nazis banned me I didn’t even bother to ask those bastards brought me a lot of memories.

  55. Krazd Says:

Is this is a permanent ban or temp?

  56. akpwnz Says:

This was my second offense, I wont be coming back. The first time it was for telling Katie Couric she gave me a boner.

When I heard people were getting banned for the script I uninstalled it. They banned me about 6 hours later.

  57. Alan Says:

    whats digg.com ?

  58. Eat Shit Whiners Says:

Take that bunch of assholes and whiners. This is a life lesson: Only those that suck balls to their bosses get promoted.

You used scripts and got hosed. MrBabyman and badwithcomputer used scripts and got slapped on the hand.

I can imagine MrBabyman dancing on his roof seeing his competitors go down in flames. Accept it you lose he wins….

  59. aislinnmarie Says:

Just for the record, not everyone was using the script that was banned. Case in point, stay at home mother that was bored to tears, I enjoyed being on digg and yes, I actually read the stories. But that didn’t save me from being banned with the rest of the crowd.

  60. N.O.N.W.O Says:

  61. JC Says:

What’s the deal with these half-assed scripts you guys use?

First off, are you guys illiterate? The TOS clearly say ALL SCRIPTS are big no-no’s.

And fuck shit like greasemonkey. Real men know real tricks. Proxy servers + cURL + language of your choice to add some noise to postings == NOT FUCKING CAUGHT!

I mean, I use that system to game a sports gambling site. I don’t imagine Digg is any more diligent.

Now, I know my method requires knowing what the fuck you’re doing, but… maybe you could sprout a fucking pair and start geeking out like real men.

  62. morons Says:

What on earth is the point of cheating Digg??? You have to be the biggest groups of whiners and losers I have ever seen. I hope you all die horrible, horrible deaths.

  63. Blowme Says:

    HA! HA!

  64. TELEVISION VOYEURS Says:

well they certainly did shake things up.

  65. Aria Says:

Why is the biggest bot of them all, mrbabyman, still around? Users are losing faith in the integrity of Digg because of people like that douche.

  66. RotoRooter Says:

I say ban the bastards. Why digg something just because your friend posted it? Maybe your friend is a lamer! I think they should institute a captcha like system so that somebody has to actually READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE before they can digg it. But.. I suppose half of them can’t read anyway. Thats the problem!

  67. Mario Says:

It makes me sick that script users ruined the site.

They should get NO second chance. Gaming the system ruined Digg which is why I don’t use it anymore.

  68. Daksh Says:

i hav 2 -3 frnds vanishing from my frnds list daily

  69. mini-me Says:

who need digg account anyways? reading for ages, there are plenty of freakig geeks to submit crap that helps me to pass my lazy times

  70. Brian Says:

Ok they where getting hits to there sites. On there sites they where probably cookie stuffing, or ad heavy. They where making MONEY!!!!!

  71. ThungurKnifur Says:

All you pathetic spammers, sploggers and SEO’s whining here about your precious Digg accounts being banned should just shut the fuck up.You have no say after you run scripts or digg 300 pages in 48 hours.Get a job, a life and stop pestering us with your incessant submissions.Damn I hate you!

  72. AwesomeInTheory Says:

Yes, I had gotten banned. But here’s my situation,

I was using Diggboss’ widget to delete shouts and get some useful information for myself. Nothing in his widget does anything to help automate the Digg process, autodigg or digg faster. I used it to monitor friends of mine and using the occasional ‘Friends Not Dugg’ feature on the shouts.

People who know me know that I didn’t tend to shout a whole lot to people.

So my account gets banned and I contact Digg. They say that I was using scripts. I explain that a) I had asked diggboss about the legality of it all and he had referred me to the API page on Digg, b) I wasn’t aware that that sort of thing was against the TOS, as it wasn’t scraping or doing anything to automate the Digg process.

    Digg told me tough titty.

Can someone please explain why I’m getting what I ‘deserved’? I stuck to the rules as I understood them and didn’t do anything to try and automate or accelerate the Digg process.

  73. what Says:

What the hell is the point of running scripts i dont get it. why digg so quickly whats the point? are you having fun or something? is that fun?

  74. Tom G Says:

Good, it’s about time. All of these idiots using scripts have ruined the site and made it nearly impossible for non-cheaters to have submissions dugg up. I don’t want to hear any whining that its BS or not fair. If you cheat and break the TOS, you should be banned. Welcome to the consequences of your actions.

  75. Andrea Says:

Anyone explain to me why someone would use scripts or cheats on Digg? Ppl are getting lazier and lazier these day. Besides, you cheat and get caught it’s bye bye time. Welcome to the real world.

  76. GCD Says:

*Yawn* WHO REALLY CARES ANYWAYS? You did something against the ToS, you got banned. What has this done? It merely means that if you’re really that concerned about it, you’ll make another account. What, you won’t have any “friends” that will digg your submissions if you create a new account? Oh my, you poor thing. You might have to actually FIND SOMETHING INTERESTING, ORIGINAL, WITH SUBSTANCE to make the front page. Pardon me? What’s that? It won’t make the front page without your “friends”? My god, what a travesty we have on our hands.

  77. Angelus Says:

About bloody time. Digg is a great news media site, but the huge digg spamming problems put heavy bias on certain articles, and make it almost impossible for any non spammer to have submissions dugg. Bravo! This is a step in the right direction.

  78. waicoo Says:

Pretty obvious with 90 percent of the articles “I HATE BUSH”. good riddance.

  82. web Says:

Heads are rolling all over. They’re banning everyone that is “suspected of using bots/macros/scripts” (except for the top users, who get phone calls and aren’t banned even when they admit to using scripts). In other words, if you digg too fast and get the “itchy trigger finger” message, you’re at risk. More social engineering from the dirtbags we made rich by using their service…

  83. Retoru Says:

Meh, who cares honestly? Digg is a site that gives far too much control to too many immature and/or ignorant people. When one guy or a handful of guys can bury a post for no other reason than spite something is wrong.

To those who got banned: move on with your lives. It’s a website, in the grand scheme of life it’s not at all important. If Digg was a huge part of your life that you just don’t know how to live without…well, you’re pathetic. Find another community of asshats, join them, and abuse their systems.

  84. AfterTheDotNet Says:

Digg kicks off users – does the cleaning act?…

Reports are bubbling up that Digg has permanently banned over 96 users for running scripts that help them automatically perform certain tasks on the site.

  85. Jim Gaudet Says:
